Description
Site of historical settlement promised to Austrian immigrants, by James Oglethorpe, founder of the colony of Georgia. Known as the Salzburgers, the group had been expelled from Salzburg, Austria, for being Protestant. This initial spot proved to be a poor site for establishing plantations, and the Salzburgers' indentured servants and enslaved Africans died in droves from disease and the swampy conditions; Oglethorpe eventually allowed the group to move to a new spot, also named "The Old Ebenezer" to hide the change from the colony's trustee board.
