Description
"German-American George Bessler lived with his family at Bessler’s Hotel, which also had a saloon/restaurant. Groups like the Germania Maennerchor, an all-male choral group which performed in the USA and abroad, rented out Bessler’s Hall for meetings and performances." Along with the Maennerchor, many other German groups met there, including the Deutscher Kriegerbund, the Barber Union, the Hessen Därmstader, the Metzer Verein and the Junge Metzger Verein. Finally, in 1907 Bessler's Saloon was attacked by the hatchet wielding temperance activist Carrie A. Nation and he wrote an absolutely amazing poem in German to commemorate it.
