In 1922, a group of musical and dance-talented German/Bavarian speaking immigrants came together for the purpose of fostering the traditions and culture of their former home and took the name of Schuhplattler V.V. (Vergnügungs Verein) "Enzian". Residing primarily in the German area of Yorkville in New York City, our originating members decided to hold meetings and rehearsals in local establishments. Today, we are the 2nd oldest Schuhplattler organization in North America.
In the year 2022, Original Enzian proudly celebrates its 100th anniversary. Our traditional folk-dancing style has its origins in the southern German regions of Bavaria and Tyrol. Schuhplattler (loosely translating to shoe-slapping) has become increasingly popular and we perform and provide entertainment not only during Oktoberfest, but throughout the year.
During the COVID pandemic, we couldn't host our annual Long Island Bavarian Heritage Festival. Instead, we decided to put our efforts into creating a "virtual" event. It was a pleasure organizing and sharing this; we hope everyone enjoys it:
